Nights spent in Ireland by overseas travellers decreased by 4.5% for the period July to September 2019.

Overseas trips to Ireland:

  • The number of overseas trips to Ireland by non-residents increased from 3.331 million in Quarter 3 2018 to 3.334 million trips in Quarter 3 2019 (+0.1%). See table 1.
  • The number of nights spent in Ireland by overseas travellers decreased by 4.5% in Quarter 3 2019 compared to the same period of the previous year, from 24.6 million to 23.5 million. The decrease in nights was most evident among US and Canadian residents, where the number of nights fell from 6.0 million to 5.3 million, a decrease of 11.3%. See table 4.
  • The average duration of overseas trips to Ireland decreased from 7.4 nights in Quarter 3 2018 to 7.0 nights in Quarter 3 2019. See table 6.
  • Total tourism and travel earnings from overseas travellers to Ireland increased by 0.9% between Quarter 3 2018 and Quarter 3 2019, increasing from €2,425 million to €2,448 million. When fares are excluded, total expenditure decreased from €1,832 million to €1,824 million, a decrease of 0.4% over the period. See table 7.

Trips by Irish residents overseas:

  • In Quarter 3 2019, the number of trips made by Irish residents overseas increased by 7.9%, from 2.571 million trips in Quarter 3 2018 to 2.774 million. This is the largest number of trips recorded for any quarter to date. See table 8.
  • The average duration of overseas trips made by Irish residents rose from 8.9 nights in Quarter 3 2018 to 9.1 nights in Quarter 3 2019. See table 9.
  • Total expenditure (including fares) by Irish residents on trips overseas increased by 12.6%, up from €2,415 million in Quarter 3 2018 to €2,720 million in Quarter 3 2019. This is the highest expenditure observed for any quarter in this statistical series. Total overseas tourism and travel expenditure exclusive of payments to Irish carriers grew 15.1%, from €1,931 million to a record €2,223 million, over the same periods. See table 10.
